For many women, building a career that honors motherhood doesn’t start with a dramatic leap or a resignation letter.
It starts with an internal shift.
A realization that success might need redefining. That your pace may need adjusting.
Before we can talk about practical steps or tangible decisions, we have to name what’s happening beneath the surface.
The Quiet Dissonance So Many Women Feel
Dissonance is a word that captures what many women experience. You worked hard for your degree. You built your career. You once dreamed of this exact path.
And now something feels… different.
Maybe motherhood shifted your priorities. Maybe fertility challenges slowed your timeline. Maybe your career evolved before children ever entered the picture.
Career and motherhood balance begins with giving yourself permission to change.
Meet Britt Ramsey: From Therapist to Career Coach
Holistically Well Podcast guest, Britt Ramsey, is a clinical therapist turned recruiter turned career coach who now helps ambitious women transform not just their resumes — but their mindsets.
After more than a decade in the corporate world (including leadership roles at global companies like L’Oréal), Britt transitioned into entrepreneurship in 2020. Today, she helps women navigate career transitions with clarity and confidence all while honoring the life they want to build beyond their work.
Her journey wasn’t linear! The episode goes on to share her…
- Career dissonance
- Major city moves (Chicago → New York → LA → Columbus)
- Years of infertility
- Entrepreneurship
- The daily dance of motherhood
She’s taken this conversation deeper by launching her own podcast, giving you a front-row seat to what this really looks like! If you’ve ever been curious about how I started my small business, tune in to hear me on Britt’s Break Room Podcast. In Britt’s interview, I break it alllll down and what building it actually required behind the scenes. 🤍
Mom Identity Isn’t Either/Or
For generations, women were often placed into one of two categories:
- Working mom
- Stay-at-home mom
But that delineation doesn’t reflect the reality of modern womanhood.
You can be:
- A stay-at-home mom with a side business.
- A business owner who works part-time.
- A full-time professional who builds intentional rhythms at home.
- A woman in a season of focusing on fertility and family.
- A woman in a season of career acceleration.
Identity is layered, right? You are not “just” one thing.
Britt shared a powerful reflection: when asked to introduce ourselves, we each choose a different identity first. Some say their job title. Some say “mom.” Some lead with a hobby.
All of them are true.
How to Gain Clarity on Your Next Step (Without a Big Leap)
If you’re feeling stuck, Britt offered two simple but profound exercises.
1. Do a Values Assessment
Not the surface-level “I value family” answer.
A real values inventory!
When you slow down and define your top values, you begin to see:
- Why certain jobs drain you.
- Why certain seasons feel misaligned.
- Why some opportunities feel exciting.
Values shift over time.
Family may rise in priority.
Autonomy may matter more than prestige.
Without clarity on your values, every career decision feels reactive.
With clarity? You move intentionally.
2. Create an Energy Audit
Make two lists:
- What energizes me?
- What drains me?
Do this for an entire day!
You might discover:
- Your work itself isn’t draining — the commute is.
- Motherhood isn’t draining — the lack of support is.
- Social media comparison is draining.
- Deep work time energizes you.
- Hosting meetings energizes you.
- Bedtime routine drains you (but stays anyway 🤍).
Keep in mind career and motherhood balance often requires adjustments not complete overhauls.
The Comparison Trap and Hustle Culture
One of the most important takeaways from this episode:
Comparison fuels false ambition.
Scrolling LinkedIn and seeing someone else’s promotion doesn’t mean that promotion is aligned with your life.
Seeing another mom scale a business rapidly doesn’t mean that pace fits your family.
Ask yourself:
Do I want this because it aligns with my values?
Or because I saw someone else doing it?
In a culture obsessed with hustle, thriving may look quieter than you think.
Sometimes thriving looks like:
- Leaving a big city to be near family.
- Working fewer hours.
- Working from home.
- Saying no.
- Building slowly.
For the Woman Who Feels Pulled in Both Directions
If you feel torn between nurturing your family and pursuing your professional calling, hear this:
You are not behind.
You are not doing it wrong.
You are not required to choose a permanent lane.
Thriving in motherhood and career doesn’t mean equal time.
It means intentional alignment.
Some seasons will lean toward:
- Motherhood
- Fertility
- Healing
- Rest
Others will lean toward:
- Expansion
- Business growth
- Leadership
- Travel
The Lord equips you for the season you are in — not the one ahead.
Sometimes, the most powerful step toward career and motherhood balance is to return to gratitude. If this season has you questioning your capacity or your identity you are not alone.
If you’re ready for more structured support in your current season — whether that’s pregnancy, postpartum, or rebuilding your strength — explore the programs and resources available through Holistically Well.
